In Matin Luther King's famous "I Have A Dream" Speech he is quoted as saying "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. "
In the 44th Presidential election, that dream has come true. It was the year that the first African American became the President of the United States. It was the first year that people of all races, colors creeds and socio-economic backgrounds banned together and exercised their right to vote. In record numbers that have never been seen before, people from every corner of the nation voted and gave us our first African American President. Obama gave us hope for a better nation. With his campaign slogan "Yes We Can!", he gave us the confirmation that we too could be anything we wanted to be- even the President of the United States. No longer could the color of our skin hold us back. No longer could we be told we could not be something because we were African American, Latino, Asian, Middle Eastern or any other race or color. This was truly a historical breakthrough and the color lines were finally becoming blurred. Just as everyone remembers where they were when Martin Luther King was assassinated and when John F. Kennedy was shot, this 44th presidential election is one that will be remembered. We will always remember where we were when the first African American was voted in as the next President of the United States.
